Texas officials, wary of species designation, pay for mussel research

Hoping to stave off further limits on how much water cities, manufacturers, farmers and ranchers could pull from Central Texas rivers, state officials announced Tuesday that they are paying for new research into the populations of five species of fresh water mussels that are being considered by federal authorities for endangered species listings.
